    Nigeria claimed 11 gold and five silver medals in the Championship using multi-gold medalist Flora Ugwunwa headed the medal haul with three gold medals while Chituru Nwaozuzu, Eucharia Iyiazi, Onyegbule Lovina, Ahiaukwu Joy, Lauritta Onye, Amon Abraham and Edosomwan Osahon accounted for the remaining part of the gold awards.

    The silver awards came from Chituru Nwaozuzu, Eucharia Iyiazi and Michael Olushola who had two silver awards in the week-long championship that lasted from May 11 to 17 in Nottwil, Switzerland based on the president of the Nigeria Para-Athletics Federation, Amobi Chikwendu.

    The president while congratulating the athletes for making Nigeria proud in the international Championship, thanked the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare who ensured that the group featured at the championship which also served as Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games qualifiers.

    Nigeria went with 10 athletes under the supervision of 2 coaches, Patrick Anaeto and Divine Jemerigbe.

    Every one of the athletes returned with a medal as Nigeria won 16 awards in the event.

    The team had nearly three weeks camping at Abuja to get ready for the relay races in the USA which also functions as Qualifiers for the Olympics.

    It’ll be remembered that the team recently missed out on the World Relays in Poland due to visa hitches.

    The Secretary-General of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Prince Niyi Beyioku stated”Our athletes are highly motivated to engage in a Variety of relays in the USA. Unlike a report which claimed that the team was stranded, it is possible to observe it is not true.

    “As one of the essential stakeholders in sports development in the state, I wish to call on the direction of the commission to deliver onboard our associates since media attaches to the various sports institutions in the nation.

    The prosecutor who was investigating FIFA president Gianni Infantino was eliminated for public statements that were biased from the head of world soccer’s governing body, a Swiss court announced on Wednesday.

    Stefan Keller opened a query into Infantino in July 2020 more than three casual meetings with the former head of the Korean public prosecutor’s office (MPC). In March he began investigating Infantino’s usage of a personal jet compensated for by FIFA.

    Keller had not yet begun a formal event in either case.

    The Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona”admitted Gianni Infantino’s petition for recusal against Stefan Keller” at a decision taken last Friday and printed on its site on Wednesday.

    The decision centred on four media communications along with a statement to a legal journal by Keller, that, the court said in its judgement, didn’t constitute”objective, neutral and correct data in the public interest”.

    “It seemed clear that there was not only the mere look of a possible bias but that he had been in fact biased towards the offender,” stated the choice.

    Specifically, Keller had noted in mid-December” signs” the FIFA boss had been guilty of”unfair direction” for using a private jet, financed by the entire body, to fly between Suriname and Switzerland in 2017.

    FIFA was quick to welcome the judgment.

    “Mr Keller had obviously violated the presumption of innocence and damaged the standing of the FIFA President, against his private rights protected under law enforcement,” it said in a statement.

    Keller refused the accusation in the judgment that he”communicated misleading and factually incorrect info”.

    Keller stated in his statement he would go over the additional process with the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (AB-BA) and with the Judicial Commission.

    “It must be clarified what impacts the choice from Bellinzona will have about the various proceedings in addition to the other parties involved,” said his announcement.

    The Swiss Federal Criminal Court has not yet examined FIFA’s request for the”nullity of the procedural acts completed thus far”.

    Infantino was being investigated for”incitement to abuse ability”, “violation of official secrecy” and”obstruction of criminal proceeding”.

    Keller has been appointed as an “extraordinary prosecutor” in July last year to investigate suspicions of collusion between FIFA and the former head of the MPC, Michael Lauber.

    The investigations focused on three key meetings held in 2016 and 2017 involving Lauber and Infantino.

    Lauber resigned last summer while FIFA’s internal justice system cleared Infantino.

    The executive Infantino simply wanted to reveal to Lauber how much FIFA had altered since the”corrupt” rule of his predecessor Sepp Blatter.

    The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has established June 14 as the date for fresh elections into its board despite the federation’s leadership crisis that has refused to end.

    It’ll be remembered that since 2018 the sports federation has been embroiled in a leadership tussle between Engineer Ibrahim Gusau and Hon. Olamide George.

    However, the international sports governing body, World Athletics (WA) in zoom assembly with the two factions, along with several officials in the Sports Ministry on Wednesday concluded that elections to the board of the AFN will hold on June 14, 2021, in a venue to be decided by the Congress which would be the apex body.

    According to a source in the Olamide George camp, the Confederation of Athletics Federation (CAA) and World Athletics (WA) embraced the 2017 constitution as the working document for the governance of their federation.

    The source further said that Engr Gusau and Adeleye had refused to sign the resolutions while staying adamant to see the end of the case in court.

    On the other hand, the technical manager, Sunday Adeleye who had been at the meeting told that the 2017 constitution wasn’t adopted as promised by another faction.

    According to him, the AFN is functioning with the amended constitution of 2019 which further down the powers of the president instead of this 2017 constitution.

    “They desired to make use of this 2017 constitution for the sake of peace but we said no because the matter is in court. Are we going to infringe on the court orders?

    “Yes, we all refused to sign the resolutions. We needed to speak to the board members along with our legal team at first before taking actions.

    “We will stick to the court cases into their logical conclusion. Can somebody bring out files and state we should sign? World Athletics will never bend rules, why should we bend rules? Just because we want peace, we’ll reside under illegality?

    It’s in the midst of these unresolved and controversial issues that the sports federation has fixed June 14 for elections

    NSF: Edo Govt threatens to shut down festival over lack of funds

    The Edo government, hosts of the ongoing 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) in Benin, will shut down the 13-day event by 12 noon Thursday, an official said late Wednesday.

    Musa Ebomhiana, Project Manager with the Media and Communications Sub-Committee of the festival’s Local Organising Committee (LOC), said the decision was necessitated by President Muhammadu Buhari regime’s refusal to fulfil a promise.

    He said the federal government failed to support the state with funds as promised, and the state government had no choice other than to shut down the festival.

    This decision was taken after an emergency meeting of the festival’s LOC headed by Edo Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.

    “You can quote me that we just finished from an emergency meeting of the LOC, and as I speak with you, we have decided to close down the festival by 12 noon tomorrow (Thursday).

    “The decision was arrived at because the federal government has reneged on its promise to help the state with funds.

    “Due to that, we’re closing the festival,” Mr Ebomhiana stated.

    He, however, didn’t disclose how the LOC was going to close down the festival.
