President Muhammadu Buhari will leave for Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, today, Sunday, May 8, 2022, to attend a United Nations-sponsored conference on the future of land, including desertification, drought, degradation, rights, restoration, and consequences for national and international economies.
President Buhari joins international leaders at the Sofitel Hotel in Paris for the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), with the subject “Land. Life. Legacy: From Scarcity to Prosperity.”
The convention’s goal is to take action to guarantee that land, the planet’s lifeline, benefits current and future generations.

COP15 will bring together leaders from governments, the corporate sector, civil society, and other important stakeholders from around the world to push progress in the future of sustainable management of one of the most valuable assets, land, to accomplish the aspirational goal of land restoration and balance.
The high-level section of the conference, which includes a Heads of States Summit, high-level roundtables, and interactive conversation sessions, will look into the connections between land and other major development concerns.
The United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 15) comes at a critical juncture in the struggle against desertification, land degradation, and drought. When a result, as the world enters the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, it will build on the findings of the second edition of the Global Land Outlook and provide a concrete solution to the interconnected concerns of land degradation, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
Drought, land restoration, and associated enablers such as land rights, gender equality, and youth empowerment are among the conference’s major priorities.
President Buhari will be accompanied on the trip by Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Abdullahi, Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi, Minister of Agriculture, Dr Mahmoud Mohammed, and Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman H. Adamu, who is also the President of the Great Green Wall of Africa.

The National Security Adviser, ret. Maj. Gen. Mohammed Monguno, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, and the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, are also on the President’s delegation to Abidjan.
