Chimaroke Nnamani, former governor of Enugu State and current senator, stated that Chiene Chiene, former chairman of the Enugu South Local Government Area, was “swooped upon” during a political meeting because he attempted to collect a rifle from security personnel.
However, Chiene revealed on Friday that his family had intervened in the assault he endured and requested that he cease giving interviews about the incident.
“My father advised me not to discuss the incident further with the media since I am still alive,” he said.
On Tuesday, it was reported that the former governor, Nnamani, and his thugs assaulted Chiene on Sunday, when he met with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegates at the Enugu North Council Secretariat.

Senator Nnamani, however, stated in a statement released by his Media Office on Friday that he never attacked anyone at the meeting.
In a statement titled “Senator Nnamani did not attack anyone,” he claims that he did not “According to the media unit, Nnamani prevented the escalation of that day’s events.
The statement stated, “On Sunday evening, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegates from the two local governments of the state met in the open arena of the council secretariat of Enugu North Local Government Area.”
According to a statement issued by his office, the senator greeted each delegate upon his arrival at the meeting location.
Upon reaching the pavilion where many delegates were already seated, there was an altercation between a group of suspected thugs and the senator’s security agents over their attempt to breach his security ring.
“Chiene I. Chiene, the former chairman of the Enugu South local government area, reportedly held the rifle sling of a DSS agent during an altercation with security personnel. As the former council chairman dared them to shoot, other security agents descended upon him in an attempt to retrieve the firearm.

“However, any further escalation was prevented by Senator Nnamani’s frantic intervention, in which he implored all parties to maintain calm.
“As soon as peace was restored, the senator briefed the delegates on his tenure in the upper legislative chamber and solicited their support in the upcoming PDP senatorial primary, to the delight of the delegates.
“Hon. Ofor Chukwuegbo, representing Enugu North/South federal constituency, the council chairmen of Enugu North/Enugu South LGAs, state legislators from the two councils, and party leaders also addressed the delegates.
