Nigeria remains top ally of the UK- British high-commissioner

According to Catriona Liang, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, the country is critical in Africa and remains a key ally and priority for the UK in many areas of mutual interest, including security, trade, energy transition, and climate change.

She said this at a press conference in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, while reflecting on Queen Elizabeth the II’s life.

Britain and Nigeria have had mutual diplomatic relations for many years, and both countries regard the other as a close ally.

Catriona Liang, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, stated that Nigeria was close to the Queen’s heart until her death.
“The strength of the relationship between us and Nigeria for me one of the absolute foundation was because of the Queen in her role as being the head of the state for a while and her role as head of common wealth and now passed to her son. When I did my credentials to her in my last diplomatic assignment to Nigeria, she mentioned her love for African and love of common wealth and she mentioned her two visits to Nigeria in 1953 for twenty days visiting all over the country for the first time and in 2003 for the common wealth head of government gathering. King Charles iii the then prince of the Wales, I assures us he follows Nigeria closely and will continue to maintain the interest and affection for Nigeria as the biggest and most important country in Africa. The Queen, the King and entire family have seen the role Nigeria plays as significant and important. Her visit has inspired the amazing spirit of the people of Nigeria, it’s been very helpful to me to have that strong bond. She was passionate about Africa and the Common Wealth generally, but personally I think Nigeria had a special place in her heart”.

The High Commissioner also noted that the Late Queen will be remembered also for her huge energy and Leadership devoted to the success of the Commonwealth Family

“She took her responsibility very seriously, since the transition from the empire to the Common Wealth. She invested her huge amount of leadership and positivity energy in creating that common wealth family. We see the success of the commonwealth because people are beginning to join the Common Wealth, that’s the club that is successful and is growing from strength to strength, Her leadership has brought nations together across Africa, the Caribbean & pacific and the coast of Australia”.

Speaking on the new King, Liang said that King Charles the III remains committed to addressing the issue of climate change, same as the Queen did.

One of the things she was passionate about is the environment and climate change, the King was aware of it and has identify the importance of protecting the environment.

King Charles is also very passionate about the environment, that’s the area of focus as we head towards COP27, we will continue to strengthen our relationship. And other areas are history of the Common Wealth. He had to modernize the commonwealth to engage the youth and know what they want.

Nigeria’s insecurity, indebtedness painful — Anglican Bishop

Rt Rev Victor Okporu, ANGLICAN Bishop of Western Izon Diocese of Ecclesiastical Province of Bendel, has lamented the country’s current state of insecurity, describing it as painful and crushing.

He also bemoaned the country’s massive debt burden.

Okporu stated at St Barnabas Anglican Church in Sagbama, Bayelsa State, during the second session of the Diocese’s fifth synod that the government had failed in its constitutional and fundamental responsibilities of protecting citizens’ lives and property.

“The state of our dear country, Nigeria, is critically worrying,” the cleric said. What should we make of the country’s escalation of violence and the gradual descent of our previously peaceful and progressive society into near anarchy?
“The mindless and vicious killings of innocent Nigerians by the killer herdsmen, bandit, Boko-Haram, terrorists of all kinds including, known and unknown gunmen.

“From the North to the South, East to the West, the story is the same sad lamentation of insecurity, economic woes, decadence in education, corruption that is unequalled anywhere, nepotism, inequity at all level, sign posting bad governance and or failed state.

“Insecurity was a notable problem to the previous administrations in Nigeria, but the Buhari-led administration in 2015 promised Nigerians that it would be terminated. But with barely nine months to the end of his eight years of two terms on the saddle, insecurity has sadly assumed a phenomenal dimension.

“It is quite alarming today that it has become a nightmare to travel by road in Nigeria as such travels are at the risk of the undertaker.”

Five killed in Ifeanyi Ubah’s convoy attack – Police

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed on Monday that five people were killed, including two police officers and three civilians, when gunmen attacked the convoy of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of Anambra South on Sunday.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the state Police Public Relations Officer, revealed this in an interview.

On Sunday, while returning to his hometown of Nnewi, Ubah’s convoy was attacked by gunmen in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.

However, one of our correspondents learned that no arrests had been made.

Aside from the five people killed, the police spokesperson stated that two officers were injured and are currently being treated.

“Two policemen and three civilians were killed in the attack while the two injured police officers are currently receiving treatment.

“No arrest has been made yet as we are still exploring every avenue to unravel the perpetrators of the attack. Further details will be communicated as development unfolds,” Ikenga said.

Meanwhile, a source identified some of the victims of the attack, saying, “Senator Ifeanyi Ubah lost his treasurer, Mr Ikechukwu Odum, who is his most trusted aide. He also lost his personal assistant, Mr Goodness Mathias.

“Another man killed, who was not in the convoy of the Senator, was identified as Onowu Agu-Ukwu Nri. He is said to be a titled chief in the neighbouring Nri community and had just driven to Enugwu-Ukwu to drop someone who visited him, who would be travelling to Lagos this morning, and he was unlucky to be at that point at the time when Senator Ubah was attacked.

“He was driving an SUV, so the assassins may have thought he was in the senator’s convoy, and he was gunned down.

“During the confusion on Sunday, all the cars were just hitting one another. Since the vehicle the senator was driving in was bulletproof, his driver managed to manoeuvre out of the damaged cars and drive away, even as it was being shot at.”

    Senator’s aide
All efforts made to speak to Ubah proved abortive as his telephone line did not connect.

But the senator’s Media Assistant, Mr Kameh Ogbonna, said if not for the bulletproof SUV, his principal would have been killed by the assailants’ bullets.

“If not for the bulletproof SUV the senator was riding in, he would have been dead by now. We were passing Enugwu Ukwu junction when they hit us from all sides,” he said.

    Outrage over attack
The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; a former governor of the state, Mr Peter Obi; the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, have condemned the attack.

While condemning the attack, Soludo, through a press statement by his media aide, said the government was fully determined to wipe out every act of criminality in the state, noting, “This is the last-ditch effort of a sinking boat by these criminal elements.”

Obi, on his part, said the attack was “unfortunate and condemnable”, describing it as one of the “cumulative” effects of bad leadership over the years.

The state Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Okelo Madukaife, commiserated with the senator and families of his aides who lost their lives as well as the state Commissioner of Police.

Apex socio-political youth organisation in Igbo land, the Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders, also condemned the attack.

Chief Frank Ozue, the Vice Chairman of Delta State’s Isoko North Local Government Area, has been kidnapped.

The incident occurred on Sunday in Ogor town, Ughelli North LGA of the state, when his car was reportedly stopped by gunmen who whisked him away to an unknown location.

When the incident occurred, the council vice chairman was said to be alone in the car on his way to the Patani area of the state.

A family source confirmed the incident to journalists in Warri on Monday, saying he was stopped by gunmen along the Iwhre-Ovie/Oviri-Ogor Road, off the Ughelli/Evwreni section of the East-West Road.

The source said, “The kidnappers left his car and his belongings including his phones at the scene of the incident. They have not reached out to the family since Sunday. The family is very worried about the state of his health.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, saying that efforts were ongoing to track the abductors with a view to securing the freedom of the victim.

Also, a pastor with The Church of Christ in Nations, identified as Rev Bung Fon Dong, has been kidnapped by gunmen who attacked the Ganawuri community in Riyom LGA of Plateau State.

Residents said the gunmen invaded the community on Sunday night, shooting sporadically for several hours.
Speaking on the incident on Monday, a resident in the area, who gave his name only as Samuel, said that the gunmen went away with the cleric after forcefully gaining entrance into his official residence, while his wife was shot in the leg.

He said, “It was around 8.30pm on Sunday that the gunmen who came in motorcycles arrived in the community. Residents who were alerted by their gunshots ran helter skelter but they forced themselves into the official residence of Rev Dong and abducted him. His wife who tried to rescue him was shot in the leg and was later taken to the hospital.”

In a separate incident, gunmen invaded the house of a principal of Government Secondary School, Bum, in the same Ganawuri community, Mr James Mann. His elder brother is the Chief Justice of Plateau State, Justice David Mann.

Mann was, however, lucky as some hunters and vigilance members rescued him from the gunmen after a hot chase.

The President, Atten Youths Development Association, Song Mare, confirmed the incident.

He said the community had been under gunmen siege in the past months, adding that no fewer than four persons were recently kidnapped in the community.

Mare called on government and security agencies to save the community from further attacks.

The PPRO in the state, Alabo Alfred, when contacted said that the command was aware of the attack on the community and had swung into action to apprehend the perpetrators.

Ekweremadu’s daughter appeals to public-spirited individuals for Kidney donation

    Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja

Sonia Ekweremadu, the daughter of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, appealed to the public yesterday to help donate a kidney to replace her damaged one.

Sonia, whose parents were arrested in the United Kingdom while trying to find her a donor, revealed on her Instagram page that she had a rare kidney disease.

The Nigerian lawmaker and his wife, Beatrice, are charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate the travel of another person for the purpose of exploitation, specifically organ harvesting.

On June 23, Ekweremadu and Beatrice were arrested and remanded in a UK prison on suspicion of plotting to harvest the organs of one David Nwamini for use by their ailing daughter, Sonia.

But Ekweremadu said the boy was undergoing medical investigations for a kidney donation to Sonia, his daughter, who was in need of a kidney transplant.

The Instagram statement said, “I, Sonia Ekweremadu, hereby appeal to the general public to come to my aid and save my life.
“I am 25 years old and a graduate of Media and Communications, University of Coventry. I dropped out of my post-graduate studies at the University of Newcastle in 2019 when I was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease, FSGS Nephrotic Syndrome.”

The young Ekweremadu stated that her family had battled to save her life and had taken her to various hospitals, but said the illness persisted and kept degenerating.

According to her, “I am presently in London, UK, receiving five hours of dialysis three to four times a week. This is at the expense of my family as I am not qualified for NHS due to my immigration status.

“The last three years have been extremely challenging. The charges being faced by my parents in London presently are directly connected to my illness and have complicated matter for me and my family.
“I do not intend to delve into details of this unfortunate development as the matter is still in court. I am, however, optimistic that the truth will prevail and it will end in praise to God.”

Sonia appealed to anybody whom it might please to assist her willingly with a kidney donation.

She stressed, “This appeal would have been utterly unnecessary as every member of my family is eager to donate their kidney to me, knowing that I would do the same for any of them.

“Regrettably, comprehensive medical examination showed that my case of nephrotic syndrome is a genetic illness and the doctors advised against donation from any of my family members, as it would likely reoccur.

“In the time that my father has been incarcerated, he has been diagnosed with acute kidney damage.

“Anybody that is moved by this appeal and wishes to donate his or her kidney to me may send an email to helpsonialive@gmail.com and include his or her name, phone number, email address and place of residence.

“Please, note that under the laws of England and Wales, organ donation must be purely driven by compassion and, therefore, no reward is involved.”

In addition, Sonia said she had decided to commit and dedicate the rest of her life to helping people with the challenge of kidney disease, upon her full recovery.

Boundary disputes worsen insecurity, 676 killed in states

According to findings, 676 people were killed in various communal and boundary disputes in Nigeria between January 2018 and August 2022.

In addition, 444 houses were destroyed during the crisis period under consideration.

This is happening as security forces fight to keep bandits, militants, and other violent criminals at bay across the country.

Security experts said the development required immediate intervention to prevent it from jeopardising the 2023 general elections, and that the situation could worsen the country’s security crisis if the government did not address it on time.

According to the findings, the majority of the clashes were the result of unresolved age-old disputes, with a few others being new cases.

A breakdown, according to states, indicated that Ebonyi State recorded the highest communal clashes in the country with 131 deaths; Taraba State, 116. Benue had 92 incidents, Kogi 67, and Cross River 73.

These were the five worst-hit states within the period.

Further breakdown of the incidents showed that a total of 113 persons were killed in 2022.

In Ebonyi, 63 persons were murdered during boundary disputes/communal clashes; Kogi 27; Cross River 8; Gombe 1; Niger 4; Akwa Ibom 3; Benue 2; Taraba 4 and Enugu 1.

In 2021, 185 persons were reportedly killed and they included 40 persons in Ebonyi; Benue 48; Gombe 22; Taraba 11; Cross River 3; and Akwa Ibom 2.

    Others were Abia 3; Kwara 5 ; Oyo 2 ; Osun 6; Ondo 3; Edo 1; Yobe 11; Adamawa 13 ; Niger 3; Anambra 2 ; Bauchi and Delta had five cases each.

The year 2020 recorded the least number of incidents and causalities as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. However, 27 deaths were recorded with nine killed in Benue; Abia 2; Taraba 5; Anambra 4; Ondo 2 and Delta 5.

    A total of 121 persons were killed in 2019 with Kogi accounting for 30; Ebonyi 15; Taraba 23 ; Benue 21; Cross River 18; Ondo 4 ; Bayelsa 2 ; Lagos-1 and Edo 7.

    In 2018, a total of 230 persons were allegedly slain with six killed in Adamawa; Delta 12 ; Kwara 2; Cross River 44; Kogi 10; Abia 10 ; Nasarawa 39 ; Ebonyi 13; Gombe 1; Taraba 73 ; Benue 12 and Niger 8.

Further breakdown revealed that within the five-year under review, Delta recorded 22 deaths; Nasarawa 39; Gombe 24; Adamawa 19; Niger 15; Abia 15; Yobe 11; Kwara 7 ;Ondo 9; Anambra 6; Bayelsa 2; Edo 8; Bauchi 5; Akwa Ibom 5; Osun 6, Enugu 1; Lagos 1 and Oyo 2.

Commenting on the sad development, the National Boundary Commission said most of the clashes involved unresolved age-long disputes over boundaries, farmland and natural resources.

The commission in a report disclosed that it was handling 86 disputes across the country.

    The report provided by the NBC Director-General, Adamu Adaji, explained that the North-West zone currently has 15 interstate disputes; North-Central 15; North-East 14; South-West 14; South-South 14 and South-East 14.

On the measures adopted to manage the issues, the commission disclosed that it had established functional boundary committees in local government areas across the country; erected boundary pillars, and also embarked on enlightenment campaigns.

“The commission has also adopted a policy on equitable sharing of straddling resources between affected states, local governments, and communities as the case may be,’’ the agency stated.

Speaking further on solutions to boundary disputes and communal clashes, the NBC said, ‘’The issue of prevention of clashes is normally handled by law enforcement agencies. However, the commission has resolved many boundary disputes.

“One of the main mandates of the commission is to intervene, determine and deal with any boundary dispute that may arise among local government areas or communities with a view to settling it.

“The commission has a total of 86 interstate boundary disputes out of which a number of interventions have been carried out, depending on the merit of the issues. Over half of these boundary disputes have been resolved while others are at different stages of the intervention process.’’

The report further clarified that disputes might be due to a quest for farmlands, infrastructure, or natural resources along the boundaries.

In boundary matters that were decided by the court, the commission said it would act as directed by the judicial authorities.

    By Nsikak Nseyen

The Big Brother Naija reality show’s producers have come under fire for the Sunday twist.

Remember that Ebuka Obi-Uchendu announced the establishment of a Level 3 house for evicted housemates?

Ebuka explained that Doyin, Chomzy and Eloswag who were evicted on Sunday will be kept in the Level 3 house until at least Sunday, September 18 2022.

He said although they will partake in normal house activities such as diary sessions, tasks and Head of House games upon their return to the main house, they are out of the running to win the N100 million grand prize.

He added that the trio will be referred to as ‘house guests’.

But reacting, fans of the show took to their Twitter to express displeasure over the twist.

Some said the former level 2 housemates who were evicted early in the game deserve the same opportunity.

    Here are some comments;

@TWEETORACLE, ”Level 3 my FOOT. Na Chomzy be the REAL level that Biggie is watching. At this point, it’s hard to argue with all the calls by fans that she’d won some tasks by unjustifiable prejudice. Tonight it all became clear. Shame on you Biggie,”

@fredsneh, ”Big brother giving this evicted housemates screen time and a chance to win sponsored task is really partial and unfair. I have started reasoning that Biggie actually has a bias towards Chomzy. Always favouring that girl. Its tiring..”

@Amchizzy, “Trenches got evicted back to back by production but he reach Chomzy and Elo turn to leave the show they introduced Level 3 for them to bag more wins. Hypocrisy na your mate.”

@QueenEhi, “Production has lost it at this point they will soon introduce a twist where the housemates will be going out to buy pepper.”

@KuukwaV, “You removed every single level 2 housemate with no sentiment, now u creating a new level for what exactly? This is annoying my life.”

@Fatalfemale_, ”The favoritism towards level 1 is clear. Level 2 were almost finished before the merger. Stop shoving these people down our throats and do the right thing. Zero credibility.”

@Ugonnaya2, ”Amaka, Ilebaye, Beauty and Khalid deserve this level 3, more than anyone else. ”

@scarce_moon, ”This is rubbish. Why not use the money you will waste in level 3 and properly feed the others still in the race?”

@Ugonnaya26, ”What wrong did Amaka do to be kicked out of this show like an outcast within the mid week, meanwhile, someone is being sent to level 3 on eviction day. Biggie, @BBNaija, you people are fraud. You people are now playing politics with this show. Fraudulent show.”

Nine dead in Madagascar river collision

Authorities said on Monday that at least nine people were killed and an unknown number were missing after a passenger boat collided with a cargo vessel on a river in northwest Madagascar.

Children were among the 35 people aboard the eight-metre (26-foot) boat when it collided on the Loza river near Antsohihy on Sunday evening, according to the River and Maritime Port Agency (APMF).
Some passengers were able to swim ashore, but others are still missing.

“We don’t know what happened to the other passengers yet,” said APMF Director-General Jean-Edmond Randrianantenaina.

According to the agency, the passenger boat was sailing from Ambiky when it was rammed by a cargo dhow and sank immediately.

Randrianantenaina suggested the accident may have been caused by lack of lighting on the passenger boat.

“The cargo ship fled after the collision, but we caught up with it,” said Randrianantenaina, adding that police were questioning the crew.

Last December a boat sank off Madagascar’s northeastern coast, claiming 88 lives, most of them seasonal workers returning home after harvesting cloves.

Two Nigerian military Super Tucano fighter jets have killed scores of Islamic State of West African Province, ISWAP, terrorists in Somalia, near Sambisa Forest, which is thought to be where the terrorists treat wounded fighters.

According to PRNigeria, in addition to killing many ISWAP fighters at the site, the airstrikes also raided Abdallari, a terrorist enclave located northeast of Maiduguri.

A defence intelligence source told PRNigeria that the bombardments also neutralised several terrorists and destroyed structures.

According to the source, the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch carried out onslaughts on the terrorists’ hideouts in Niger and Kaduna State.
He said: “For instance, strikes were undertaken in Kaduna on 7 September 2022 following series of intelligence from various sources on terrorists’ hideouts at Gidan Waya, in Chikun Local Government Area (LGA).

“There, the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch discovered terrorists’ structures hidden under clusters of trees at the location with terrorists’ activities noticed within the vicinity.

“Subsequently, the targets were acquired and attacked with bombs. Mr Gabwet said: “For the NAF, its ability to continually dominate troubled parts of the country in collaboration with the surface forces in order to eliminate terrorist elements and restore normalcy should never be in doubt.

Prof Wahab Egbewole, the Vice Chancellor-designate of the University of Ilorin, has pledged that his administration will be fair to all members of the university community in its dealings and just in all circumstances.

Professor Egbewole was elected as the institution’s new vice chancellor following a rigorous selection process overseen by the university’s Governing Council.
Thirteen candidates competed in the process, and at the end of the day, Professor Egbewole, a legal luminary, emerged victorious.

Various university interest groups have praised the university’s governing council for conducting a free and transparent election, and they have pledged their support and loyalty to the incoming vice chancellor, Prof. Egbewole.

The tenure of the outgoing vice chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem, would come to an end on October 15, 2022.
A statement issued in Ilorin yesterday by Prof. Egbewole signed by the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, quoted the newly appointed vice chancellor as saying that “the University of Ilorin is greater than all of us, and we want to extend our hands of fellowship to all our colleagues who also applied for this post, and appealed that they should join hands with us to do this work collectively and in an all-inclusive manner.”

“We give kudos to the workers of this great University for their untiring efforts in ensuring that our system continues to run in spite of the challenges.

“We will continue to give premium to the training and re-training of the workforce while the welfare of the workers will be given priority.

“Our efforts at improving the quality of research will lead to a few innovations in that regard, and we implore the concerned staff to see us as partners in progress with a view to ensuring enhanced capacity and improved delivery.

The federal government has referred the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUUlong-running )’s strike to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) for adjudication. This was the result of a failed dialogue between the union and the Federal Ministry of Education.
According to Section 18 (I) (b) of the TDA Cap T8, the government requested a court order allowing ASUU members to resume work at their various universities while the issues in dispute were being addressed by the NICN. LFN 2004.

A statement by the Head, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Olajide Oshundun, said the demand was contained in a referral instrument addressed to the Registrar of NICN, dated September 8,2022, and signed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige.
In the matter billed for mention at 9am today, the federal government asked the NICN to inquire into the legality or otherwise of the on-going prolonged strike by the ASUU leadership and members that had continued even after apprehension by the Minister of Labour and Employment.
It asked the court to interpret in its entirety the provisions of Section 18 LFN 2004, especially as it applied to the cessation of strike once a trade dispute was apprehended by the Minister of Labour and Employment and conciliation was ongoing.

Other requests included that the court should “Interpret the provisions of Section 43 of the Trade Dispute Act, Cap T8. LFN 2004, titled, ‘Special Provision with Respect to payment of wages during Strikes and Lock-outs,’ specifically dealing with the rights of employees/workers during the period of any strike or lock-out.
“Can ASUU or any other union that embarked on strike be asking to be paid salaries even with clear provisions of the law.
“Determine whether ASUU members are entitled to emoluments or ‘strike pay’ during their period of strike, which commenced on February 14, 2022, more so in view of our national law as provided in Section 43 of the TDA and the International Labour Principles on the right to strike as well as the decisions of the ILO Committee on Freedom of Association on the Subject.

“Determine whether ASUU has the right to embark on strike over disputes, as is the case in this instance, by compelling the federal government to employ its own University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) in the payment of the wages of its members as against the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) universally used by the federal government in the nation for payment of wages of all her employees in the federal government Public Service of which university workers including ASUU members are part of or even where the government via NITDA subjected ASUU abd their counterpart UPPPS university payment platform system software to integrity test (vulnerability and stress test) and they failed.”
The federal government further asked the court to determine the extent of ASUU’s demand since the 2020 Memorandum of Action (MOA) that the union signed with government.
The demands included the funding for revitalisation of public universities as per 2009 agreement, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) payments, state universities proliferation and constitution of visitation panels, and release of white paper on the report of the visitation panels.

The others were the reconstitution of the government renegotiation team for renegotiation of 2009 agreement, which was renegotiated 2013/2014, due for renegotiation 2018/2019, and the migration of ASUU members from IPPIS to its own UTAS, which is currently on test at NITDA.

Meanwhile, as parents and students of Nigeria’s public universities worry that there might be no end in sight to the disagreement between the federal government and ASUU, a report by the Committee on Needs Assessment of Nigerian Public Universities (CNANPU) that was set up by the government to carry out a detailed appraisal of the existing situation in the universities and the requirements for their transformation, revealed that Nigeria’s university system had a manpower crisis.

CNANPU also reported that the physical facilities for teaching and learning in Nigerian universities were inadequate, dilapidated, over-stretched, over-crowded and used beyond their original carrying capacity.
The committee noted, “Academic culture is dying very fast” in the public universities, as “library facilities and services are archaic and comatose (while) many laboratory equipment are only known to students in theory (who) never seen many of them not to talk of using them.”

It also observed that there was numerically more non-academic staff in the services of the universities than the teaching staff they were meant to support. It said that had created “a scenario in which the tail is wagging the dog, as more expenditure is incurred in administration and routine functions than in core academic matters.

“More than 70% of non-teaching staff lack a first degree, indicating a lack of professionalism or unqualified personnel in specific roles within universities.”
The committee’s report, which was submitted to the federal government on November 1, 2012, and a copy of which was obtained over the weekend, provided insights that may aid in resolving the crisis that has kept the university gates closed for nearly seven months.

It stated that many lecturers, including professors, shared small offices while open-air sports pavilions, old cafeteria, convocation arenas, and even uncompleted buildings were used for lectures; and in some cases, workshops were conducted under corrugated sheds or trees.

The eleven-man committee’s membership included Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund); representatives of the Senate and House of Representatives; Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Ministries of Education, Finance, and Trade and Investment; National Planning Commission; National Universities Commission (NUC); and then President of ASUU, Professor Ukachukwu Aloysius Awuzie.

It noted, “So much pressure is put on existing facilities mainly due to unplanned expansion of programmes” in the public universities.
The committee lamented that the current enrolment into public universities in Nigeria “is a reversal of the national policy, as the current science to non-science ratio is 32:68 instead of 60:40.”

In addition, “There is no relationship between enrolment and the tangible manpower needs of the nation,” the report said.
It captured the state of Nigerian universities, thus, “students sitting on bare floor or peeping through windows to attend lectures; over 1000 students being packed in lecture halls meant for less than 150 students; over 400 students being packed in laboratory meant for 75 students; students cannot get accommodation, where they get they are packed like sardines in tiny rooms; no light and no water in hostels, classrooms and laboratories and that students use the bushy areas of their campus for toilet because lavatory facilities are too hazardous to use.”
Other problems, according to the committee, include “broken furniture everywhere, unkempt buildings and dilapidating facilities” as well as “over-worked, untrained, and inadequate teachers, etc.”

It stated that these were actually symptoms of the real problems, which “are the quality of leadership and governance in the universities.”
The committee stated that some university administrators “spend millions to erect super-gates when their libraries are still at foundation level; expend millions to purchase exotic vehicles for university officers even though they lack basic classroom furnishings; spend hundreds of millions in wall-fencing and in-fencing when students’ accommodation is inadequate and in tatters.”

The committee also stated that in the course of its assignment, it found that majority of the universities in the country were, “Grossly under-staffed, rely heavily on part-time and visiting lecturers, and have under-qualified academics, and only a few of them attract expatriate lecturers but have no effective staff development programme.”

It added, “Based on the available data, there are 37,504 academics in Nigerian Public Universities (in 2012) that were saddled with teaching 1,252,913 students. The teaching staff-students’ ratio is as much as 1:363 in some universities.
“Instead of having 100 per cent of the academics having PhDs, only about 43 per cent do so. The remaining 57 per cent have no PhDs.
“Instead of having 75 per cent of the academics between senior lecturers and professors, only about 44 per cent are within the bracket while the remaining 56 per cent are not.”

The report added, “Only seven universities have up to 60 per cent of their teaching staff with PhD qualifications…there are universities in which the total number of professors is not more than five. And total number of PhDs in the whole university is not up to 30.”
The committee lamented the increasing culture of visiting lectureship’ in the university system. It stated that out of a total of 37,504 lecturers, only 28,128, representing 75 per cent, were engaged on full-time basis, implying that 9,376 are recycled as visiting, adjunct, sabbatical and contract lecturers.

It said, “Some academics are always on the road travelling from one university town to another and unable to meet their primary obligations with their tenure-employer.
“It is making some proprietors of state universities to believe that they can run universities without any programme for academic staff development and for recruiting full-time lecturers.

“No Nigerian academic is in the league of Nobel Laureates or a nominee of Nobel Prize.
“There are only two registered patents owned by Nigerian academics in the last three years,” as at 2012.

They also said that, their decision to dump the APC was to support the leadership qualities of the PDP leaders in the state especially the former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki to lead the state from hawks of the APC led administration..

Welcoming the decampees, the Baboko Ward PDP chairman, Alhaji Mashood Yakub advised them to work for the progress of PDP and the country at large.

How I make N2 million monthly selling sex-enhancement drugs – Vendor, Yusuf Bashir

    by Kirk Leigh

Yusuf Bashir gleefully counts his ward of cash from the afternoon sales, the total so far was N35, 000. In response to this reporter, he stated in pidgin English, “By the end of today, I fit make N100,000, walahi.” Many people continue to transfer. It’s a good business, and I have to tell you the truth.”

Yusuf makes up to N2 million per month selling sex enhancement drugs to men and women. His small open kiosk in Abuja’s Utako market is stocked with products such as ‘butt’ and breast enlargement creams,’sweeteners’ for women, herbs that promise to prolong sexual intercourse for men, and a variety of tablets, syrups, herbs, and creams that claim to enlarge the male reproductive organ.

Yusuf claims that he stocks products that can make a woman attract a target male partner including those that can diabolically make a man spend more on a woman.
He also sells creams and powders that can help a man ‘catch the love of his life”.

He called this category of products, ‘Kanya mata’ for women and ‘Kanya maza’ for men.
These kinds of products have been known to be popular in northern Nigeria and are a common sight at roadside kiosks and markets.
The footfall in his kiosk on a hot afternoon confirms the lucrative nature of the business.
His customers include returnees while others are new and found him based on word-of-mouth recommendations.
He claims the recommendations are testaments that his drugs are effective.
    The supply value chain
Yusuf gets his supplies from Kano, the ancient city which is about 7 to 8 hours away from Abuja by a fast-moving car but about 18 hours in the case of Yussuf who takes the night bus.

He makes that journey every two weeks to keep up with demand.
While some of the products are locally made, especially in Kano, others are made in the Middle East especially Saudi Arabia and China. The products are imported by a closely knit band of sex enhancement drug businessmen who have built a solid distribution chain that is built to meet surging demand. He states that some of his products are NAFDAC approved some are not, especially some of the locally made ones.
    Customer Demographics
Yusuf explains that his customer demographics are diverse in age and gender but most are women from their mid-twenties to late forties. Men patronize the business as they seek drugs that can give them longer staying power during sex. But for Yusuf, it is the women he cherishes the most.

“It is the babes that carry my market up”, he said, referencing women are his largest customer base. “Them they spend the money without looking back as far as dem get wetin dem they look for”, Yussuf explains.

Pointing to the section where he arranged his women-related inventory, he said that more than half of what he sells is of interest to women while men on the other hand are a hard sell. “Men de too dey price the medicine, but women go pay you sharp sharp. Sometimes dem no want people to see wetin dem de buy”.

    NAFDAC’s position on sex-enhancing drugs
Regulator, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is reported to have warned Nigerians to desist from the use of sex enhancement drugs insisting that they could lead to stroke or sudden death.

NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said this last December in her Christmas message to Nigerians. She noted that most of the drugs are not registered with NAFDAC. “They are smuggled into the country.
If they were registered, the producers and peddlers, alike, would not be doing what they are doing in the supermarkets, social media platforms and on the streets,” Adeyeye said.
The NAFDAC boss described as false the claim by producers of the drugs that they have no side effects, stressing that the agency will not relent in going after peddlers and bringing them to book for violating regulations.

    The money in sex medicine
Despite NAFDAC’s warnings, many are attracted to the business due to its lucrative nature. Another trader, Bose, who spoke to this writer operates at the Car Park at Federal Secretariat in Abuja. She displays her wares at the car park in the booth of her parked car. She doesn’t need to pay for a shop.

Although she declined to say how much she makes, Bose told this reporter that she is comfortable and not looking to leave the business soon, saying that her inventory turnover period is very short; a matter of days.
    The industry
There is a dearth of research on how much the industry is worth but Pfizer, makers of viagra netted a whopping $1.6 billion in 2016 selling the product to men who want to prove a point in the bedroom.

Another major market where sex enhancement drugs are sold is on online channels like social media.
Instagram and Facebook serve as haven while Jiji.com and Jumia have become a hypermarket for dealers who would deliver at the click of a button. To underscore interest by Nigerians is the number of followers garnered by Jaruma, a self-claimed apostle of Kayan mata, a local variety of sex enhancers for women. She is followed by an eye-popping 1.2 million people.
There are over twenty long threads on the subject on Nairaland with many prescribing supposed efficacious remedies for men suffering erectile dysfunction.
    Health implications
There are health implications of using sexual enhancers, according to medical practitioners. Barnabas Health Medical Group, which is based in New Jersey, USA itemised the following effects:

Damage to the urethra (tube that lets out urine and semen)
    Permanent difficulty maintaining an erection
    Permanent problems with urination
Penis “fractures” (a rupture of the tissue in the penis) causing bleeding and requiring surgery
    Dangerous drops in blood pressure
Healthline, a popular online medical journal itemises, dizziness, headaches, body aches pain, digestive disorders, vision changes and flushes as some of the side effects of using sexual enhancement medicine.

Interview done, Yussuf hurries to leave the shop to catch his night bus to Kano promising to bring ‘something strong’ for this reporter. But he would be failing his tradition if he leaves without handing a ‘token’ to this reporter, he insists. So, with a mischievous smile, he hands a small stuffed grocery bag to the reporter, saying, “Your madam go de call you Mai Gidda from today”.
