2023: Buhari bids farewell to10 outgoing Ministers, with plans to replace them soon

President Muhammadu Buhari bid ten outgoing members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) farewell on Friday in Abuja, stating that a large number of them are well-equipped to seek higher political offices, including the presidency.

“I have no doubt that if the next President emerges from among former members of this cabinet, like any other aspirant, ample competence and outstanding service delivery would be on display,” President Muhammadu Buhari said during a valedictory session at State House Abuja for appointees leaving the cabinet to pursue political ambitions. This will be one of the things we leave behind for Nigerians.”

At the last FEC meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, the President, who praised the departing public officers for sacrificially serving the nation “with dignity and honour,” directed that all Ministers and other political appointees who wish to run for elective office in the 2023 General Elections resign their current positions.

“I notice that some have already cooperated, while others are in the process of doing so. I’d want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your decision and courage to run for public office, as well as your adherence to my instructions.

“I also want to express my gratitude to you for your great efforts to this country as Cabinet members.” He continued, “I wish you success in the upcoming elections and in your future endeavours.”

Noting that the departure of some cabinet members has undoubtedly created a void that must be addressed, the President stated that appointments would be made as soon as possible to ensure that the administration’s work is not jeopardised.

“The trip to the finish line is still very distant,” he said, urging the remaining cabinet members to exhibit greater dedication, perseverance, and determination to better serve Nigerians.

Ministers of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio; Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu; State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva; and Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige were among the outgoing members of the FEC who were present during the valedictory session.

Other members are Abubakar Malami (SAN), Attorney-General and Minister of Justice; Uche Ogah, Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development; Pauline Tallen, Minister of Women Affairs; and Chief Tayo Alasoadura, Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs.

Emeka Nwajiuba, the Minister of State for Education, who had earlier offered his resignation, was unable to attend the valedictory session but sent his regrets.

On behalf of the departing ministers, Akpabio expressed gratitude to President Obama for allowing them to serve and contribute their fair share to the nation’s development.

Working with President Muhammadu Buhari was a “wonderful and knowledgeable experience,” he said, adding that they will continue to be great disciples of Buhari when they step down.

“As we leave FEC, know that you have disciples in us.” I’d like to let you know that it’s past time for us to spread Buharism.

“I want you to know that we will be working together with the Minister of Information and Culture to bring your message of transformation, love, patience, and administrative savvy to Nigerians,” he said.

Following the session, Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed told State House correspondents that some of the ten ministers had already submitted their resignation papers, while others were in the process of doing so.

“I think he addressed you yesterday and he said you should wait for the news,” Mohammed stated when asked about the situation with Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, who is also rumoured to be running for president.
