The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has confronted Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige about its six-month strike.
ASUU accused Ngige of destabilising the dispute resolution process between the union and the federal government.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, President of ASUU, addressed a press conference at the University of Abuja on Tuesday, according to NAN.
According to ASUU President, the union will never suspend its strike, but will instead ensure that it ends permanently.
“ASUU, therefore, makes the audacious claim that the Minister of Labour and Employment has assumed the role of unabashed protagonist in our ongoing dispute with the government of Nigeria for some inexplicable reasons,” he said.
“Previously, Dr. Ngige told anyone who would listen that he was not the employer of university academics and advised the union to march to the Ministry of Education.” Nigerians may wonder why he has suddenly turned around to become an impediment to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing crisis.”
Since February 2022, ASUU has been on strike.
The union went on strike over the payment method for lecturers.
While ASUU insisted on UTAS for universities, the Federal Government preferred that lecturers use IPPIS in the same way that other federal civil servants do.
