Centre seeks Presidential Assent for NYSC Trust Fund Bill

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity, and Transparency, CESJET, has once again urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the National Youth Service Corps NYSC trust fund bill, which was recently passed by the National Assembly, into law.

At a press conference in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of CESJET, Isaac Ikpa, stated that the bill’s signing into law will bring economic prosperity to Nigerian youths.

According to Ikpa, CESJET is overjoyed that a brilliant initiative like the NYSC-TF has been approved by the National Assembly after extensive deliberation on its pros and cons.

” It is instructive to note that the provisions of the NYSC-TF are well-intentioned and well-positioned to address the challenges faced by the country’s teeming young population.”

“Like many other civil society groups, we were involved in the process that resulted in the Bill in its early stages as concerned stakeholders in the country.” “Our participation was critical in understanding firsthand what the NYSC-TF aimed to achieve,” he said.

He stated that CESJET’s acceptance of the NYSC-TF was due to its extensive provisions that systematically addressed critical youth development and empowerment issues. It goes without saying that the NYSC-TF would be a game changer in terms of youth development and empowerment in the country.

This much he said has been emphasised by various stakeholders who are well positioned to harness the potential of the county’s youths. And given the peculiarities of the time and the need for government to explore ways to harness the potential of youths in the pursuit of sustainable growth and development, we couldn’t agree more.

“We are using this medium to request presidential assent from President Muhammadu Buhari in order to signal a new beginning for the country’s teeming youths in our pursuit of sustainable growth and development.”

“This comes on the heels of the NYSC-TF having the potential to change the lives of our youth for the better by empowering them to be entrepreneurs and employers of labour.” The strategic significance of a positively engaged young population cannot be overstated.

“Youth empowerment has the potential to significantly reduce poverty rates.” Skill development is one of the keys to empowering youth. When a youth is equipped with necessary skills, they can use them to feed themselves, help others, and even invest for future use, thereby assisting the nation economically.

“Youth empowerment programmes improve social skills, behaviour, academic achievement, self-esteem, and self-efficacy.” Youth empowerment is critical to the alleviation and eradication of poverty in society. It is our firm belief that empowered youth focus more on skill development in order to make it a better source of income for them in the early stages.

“An empowered and dedicated youth works hard and creates job opportunities for them to achieve financial independence and contribute to the country’s economy.”

We wish to state unequivocally that the NYSC-TF is well positioned to achieve the aforementioned goals when signed into law, thus the need for presidential assent to begin a new journey for Nigerian youths.

We wish to inform President Muhammadu Buhari that the benefits accrued to the country through the NYSC-TF are indefinite; therefore, presidential assent to the NYSC-TF is now required.

“We also want to take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders who contributed to the creation of the NYSC-TF.” It was a robust engagement that resulted in one of the best policy decisions of this administration, from civil society groups to youth groups and other concerned stakeholders, including the leadership of the National Youth Service Corp.

We also applaud the members of the National Assembly for their patriotism. The National Assembly has demonstrated once again that there are worthy partners of progress by scrutinising, amending, and passing the Bill into law.

We must recognise that Nigeria has everything it needs to achieve greatness, and the role of the youth in this regard cannot be overstated. As a result, it is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to ensure that the NYSC-TF receives presidential assent.

“We hope that the addition of the NYSC-TF will signal a new beginning for the youths and the country as a whole.” And gone would be the days when our youth would be out on the streets looking for white-collar jobs that have remained elusive. Instead, we will honour entrepreneurs, innovators, and labour employers.”
