Father cries for help as 4 children buried alive by mudslide in Cross River

In the Okangbang community, 8 miles off Nasarawa in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State, four children of the same parents were buried alive by a mudslide.

The incident was confirmed by the physically challenged father of the deceased children, Ndifreke Nkanta.

The remaining two children, he claimed, suffered varying degrees of injuries and have been admitted to the hospital, while the other four children died instantly.

“The tragic incident took place Sunday night following a significant downpour that caused many of the local homes to collapse.

“Four of my six children who were inside the house that collapsed on them due to the mudslide have died, leaving me with no children. They were eating when the house fell on them, taking them with it.

“My other two kids are in the hospital and are in serious condition.

“When the house was destroyed by the flood, I didn’t even take a pin.

I don’t even have enough money now to pay for the two who are still alive. I don’t have a place to live. I make a public plea for assistance. I want a home. I want a job. The two in the hospital need food, so I need to get some,” he said.

The community’s chairman, Mr. Asanga Donatus, revealed that the bereaved father had been grieving and was also struggling financially.

Even though he is a petty trader, as I speak to you, he has no money to pay for the two patients’ hospital care.

“Our neighbourhood is in a really precarious condition, and the government needs to act quickly to stop further house collapses and fatalities,” he emphasised.
