NEC says 4.5 million youths have completed online voter registration in May 2022

As of May 30, 2022, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported that 4.5 million Nigerian youths had completed online voter registration for new voter cards.

According to INEC’s data, youths between the ages of 18 and 34 accounted for 69.5 percent of all online registrations completed since the CVR began. While 10.2 million new applications were received, only 6.5 million completed their registration, with 4.5 million of those being youths.

Various advocacy campaigns by influencers on various social media platforms, particularly Twitter, may have sparked the youth’s interest in registering for voter’s cards this year.

INEC reports that 1.3 million of the 6.5 million Nigerians who completed the online registration were between the ages of 35 and 49, while 556,572 were between the ages of 50 and 69.

76,186 older people aged 70 and up used the online platform to register for a voter’s card.

3.25 million men and 3.29 million women applied for the job.

Important information
The electoral umpire announced that online voter registration would close on Monday, May 30th, 2022, and that continuous voter registration would end on June 30th, 2022. However, as of the time of filing this report, checks reveal that the portal is still operational.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu to extend the voter registration deadline to allow eligible Nigerians more time to exercise their right to vote, similar to how the electoral body has extended the deadline for party primaries.
“Extending the voter registration deadline would provide more time for eligible voters, including young people, the elderly, people with disabilities, and those living in IDP camps, to participate in the 2023 elections,” according to SERAP.
