Anambra State police have reportedly arrested two suspected cultists who were involved in the killing of a rival cultist, beheading him, and playing soccer with his head last year.
A video went viral in September of last year, showing some young men suspected of being cultists dragging out another young man suspected of being a member of a rival cult group, gunning him down in cold blood, and beheading him.
Another part of the video showed the young men making fun of the beheaded rival cultist’s head while playing soccer with it.
According to sources, the incident occurred in Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area, the same community that houses the State-owned university, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), and the head was taken to the State capital, Awka, where the youths used it to play.
In a viral video, two young cultists, Chisom Okafor and Ikechukwu Chinweze, aged 23 and 19, admitted to being members of the Ayes cult and participating in several killings.
Chisom Okafor, 23, was seen in the video confessing: “I’m also known as Stamina.” My mother is from Awka, but I am from Igboukwu. I am 23 years old. I am a member of the Ayes cult and have only killed three people previously.”
He named two of the three people he has killed. They include Edu Obara and Savage. Both are suspected cultists who were assassinated and beheaded in 2021. While Edu Obara was killed in Igbariam, Savage was killed and beheaded in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area, and his trunk was taken to Awka.
He continued, “I was among the cultists who went to Obj’s place (just a nickname) and killed some security men.” We were seven people who participated in the operation. I dropped out of school, but I’m a tiler, and I’m very good at it.”
Okafor also mentioned the names of the seven members of their cult who took part in the operation against security guards in the video.
Another cultist interviewed in the video said, “I’m Ikechukwu Chinweze, I’m 19 years old, from Umuzocha in Awka.” I’m a school dropout who was learning phone repair before meeting Chisom here in Ifite.”

Meanwhile, some Anambra State residents claim that the man killed last year was the same person whose head was used to play soccer, implying that the now-arrested cultists were responsible for the act.
“Some group of boys have been caught and are now at state CID Awka,” said Iyke Orji, an Anambra native.
“They admitted that they are the boys who went viral on social media a while ago while playing ball with human skulls.”
“They admitted that they were the boys who attacked and killed security guards at Miracle Junction Awka.”
“They confessed to killing someone (Savage) in Oko, transporting the body to Awka, and decapitating the body in Amaenyi Awka.”
“One of them is 19.” “No one is older than 25.”
According to a source, the interview took place at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), but when contacted by the State police command to verify the video, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, pleaded for more time.
The PPRO, Ikenga, had yet to respond to our correspondent at the time of filing this report.
