The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has stated that the man who raped a three-year-old girl and others will be punished severely.
He spoke on Thursday in Lafia during the inauguration of the State Action Plan (SAP) on the United Nations Security Council Resolution on Women, Peace and Security (UNSCR 1325).
In June, one Ahmadu Yaro, 27, was arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for defiling four different babies in Adogi village of Lafia government Area.
The governor said the incident had left the state in shock.
He vowed to secure justice for the family of the child and ensure such an incident never repeats itself.
“Let me place it on record that the government will not take it lightly with whoever is caught in this dastardly act and will be severely dealt with in accordance with the law. I call on parents and the vigilante groups to ensure effective monitoring of our children in order to guard them against this kind of act.”
Sule condemned the spate of rape in Nigeria and expressed concern about the adverse effects on the victims.
The governor, however, declared his support for the State Action Plan team.
He promised to accord women the rights and necessary support to participate in peaceful resolutions.
