Three jailed for possession of marijuana in Abuja

On Thursday, three men were each given a 10-month prison term for marijuana possession by a Dei-dei Grade I Area Court in Abuja.

All three of the convicted inmates—Mallanta Lawal, Lawal Mohammed, and Sani Lawali—have no fixed addresses and all three entered guilty pleas while pleading with the judge to be forgiving.

Lawal, Mohammed, and Lawali were sentenced based on their guilty pleas, according to Justice Sulyman Ola’s ruling.

“Having found the defendants guilty of the offence, in keeping with their pleading for mercy and as first-time offenders who did not waste the court’s time or resources, the court gives them the option to pay an N40,000 fine,” he held.

According to him, the verdict would act as a deterrent to anyone considering committing a crime.

The defendants were charged with two counts of joint acts and possession of dry leaves believed to be marijuana, according to earlier testimony from the prosecution’s attorney, Mr. Chinedu Ogada.

According to Ogada, the criminals were detained on June 28 at around 6 p.m. by a group of police officers under the command of CSP Sadiq Abubakar, Divisional Police Officer, Mabushi, Abuja, while on patrol in Mabushi.

The defence attorney claimed that all three suspects confessed to committing the crime during the police investigation.
