Fear has gripped residents of Enugu’s Awkunanaw axis, the state capital, following the Thursday attack on a police checkpoint at MTD, Gariki by suspected gunmen.
During the exchange of gunshots between law enforcement agents and suspected criminals, three police officers were feared dead.
A few days earlier, hoodlums stormed a drinking establishment in the area, killing a vigilante and the wife of a local government councillor.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the attack and told reporters that there was a shooting, but he could not say whether there were any police casualties.
“Yes, I’ve learned that masked gunmen opened fire there this morning, but I can’t confirm whether any police officers were killed.”
