    Obasanjo’s failed efforts and amend the constitution to remove presidential term limits drew widespread criticism. He acquired a PhD in theology from Nigeria’s National Open University after retiring.

    Obasanjo has been known as one of the great figures of the post-colonial African leaders’ second generation.

    He was praised for overseeing Nigeria’s transition to representative democracy in the 1970s as well as his Pan-African efforts to promote cooperation on the continent.

    Critics stated he was corrupt, that his administrations oversaw human rights violations, and that as President, he became too involved with consolidating and retaining his personal control.

    Hundreds of APC And APGA women defect to PDP, laud Ikpeazu

    About 700 women from the All Progressive Congress, APC, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Ndume Ibeku, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, Thursday, defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

    The defected women had been led into the ruling PDP within the state by former Umuahia East constituency APC Woman Chief, Woman Charity Ekeleme.

    Talking on behalf of the decampees at Ohokobe Mbaocha Sq., venue of the declaration ceremony, Woman Ekeleme stated that APC has derailed within the service of humanity and the nation.

    Ekeleme stated that the progressive party has failed to address teething challenges bedevilling the nation and lamented the present insecurity within the land and the nation’s economic downturn, occasioned by the incompetence of the APC government at all levels in Nigeria.

    The Leader of APC defectors further said that they were propelled to join the ruling PDP due to the excellent achievements of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Senator Theodore Orji and the Speaker, Rt. Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, which she mentioned, were second to none.

    Ekeleme stated that with their defection to the Peoples Democratic Party, APC and APGA are buried and further disclosed that many hundreds of APC women will soon jump ship and pitch their tents with the ruling party in Abia state.

    Welcoming the defected APC and APGA women, the PDP Chairman Ndume Ward, Mr. Chidozie Okpechi lauded them for their bold step in joining the party, assuring them that they are going to be carried alongside within the running affairs of the party.

    The PDP Chairman warned them against anti-party activity and urged them to give their most support to the party and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu-led administration to proceed with his people-oriented works.

    On his part, a prominent chieftain of the PDP from Ndume Umuahia Ibeku, Sir Innocent Nwachukwu felicitated with the decampees for their courage to align with PDP, which according to him, has exhibited exemplary leadership.

    Nwachukwu stated, “It is with great elation that I’ve received the information about your decision to join our great party, PDP. Your decisions are in the right direction owing to what Ndume people have benefited from the government and what they stand to benefit being the ward housing Abia new government house”.

    Arsenal head coach, Mikel Arteta has revealed his conversation with a young striker, Folarin Balogun over the player’s future, saying it was positive.

    The teenager has just a few months left on his current deal therefore the negotiation to keep him longer at the Emirates.

    “We have had some really positive conversations with his agent as well and Edu is in charge of that.

    “He’s been spending a lot of time and energy to make that deal occur as a result of it’s important for us to maintain our talent in the house.

    The Spaniard boss, however, vowed that the club will do everything to keep the player on the club.

    Osun State House of Assembly yesterday approved the Amendment of Local Government Administration Bill 2021.

    The Nation recalls that in 2016, during the tenure of former governor Rauf Aregbesola, he signed the Local Government Administration No. 6 law of 2016 into legislation, which has been the practice to date.

    The bill, sponsored by Speaker Timothy Owoeye, sought to exchange the Local Government Administration No. 6 law of 2016.

    A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Kunle Alabi, confirmed that on the plenary of the House, held that Section 2 (a) of the State of Osun Local Government Administration amendment No. 6 Bill 2016 is amended forthwith as “where a local government council, local council growth areas or area council is dissolved and no election has been conducted to reconstitute the council or it has become impracticable to immediately conduct an election to fill the vacancies thereby created, the governor shall appoint a Caretaker

    Management Committee to run the affairs of the council for a period not exceeding six months.

    “The Local Government Caretaker Management Committee shall comprise the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary to the Local Government and a member from each of the wards within the local government area or local council development area. In the case of an area council, an administrator shall be appointed.

    “The appointments shall be subjected to the confirmation of the House of Assembly.”

    The tenure of the elected officials of local governments expired on February 5, and the chairmen had handed over the administration of local governments to the most senior profession officers of councils.

    Ogun: Gov Dapo Abiodun gives update on COVID-19 vaccines

    Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun said the state government has installed a solar-powered cold chain for the COVID-19 vaccines that have now arrived in Nigeria.

    Abiodun stated this on Wednesday, during a meeting he held with all Ogun State’s 20 Local Government Transition Chairmen at his Okemosan office, Abeokuta.

    According to Abiodun, the State would prioritise frontline healthcare staff in administering the coronavirus vaccines.

    The Governor expressed confidence that the herdsmen crisis within the State would not cease the vaccine from getting to the grassroots.

    “We have installed a solar-powered cold chain for the COVID-19 vaccines which have now arrived in Nigeria and will be prioritising frontline healthcare staff in its administration.

    “At the meeting, we held with all Ogun State’s 20 Local Government Transition Chairmen earlier today, I disclosed this as I expressed confidence that the current security challenges that are steadily phasing out won’t stop the vaccine from getting to the grassroots,” he stated.

    On the security challenges facing the state, he said, “two major measures are being put in place to address insecurity and access to remote areas. In addition to the Peace Committee, we will first launch the Amotekun security outfit in Yewa in the coming weeks. We can even rehabilitate the Papalanto-Ilaro Road, as well as construct link roads in other areas.”

    Former Super Eagles star, Obafemi Martins, AKA Obagoal has opened up on the rift with Music superstar, Burna Boy.

    It was reported that Nigerian rapper, Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf, AKA CDQ attacked Burna Boy for disrespecting Obafemi Martins.

    In what seemed like a ‘brewing ‘beef’ CDQ had via his Twitter handle on Monday, scolded Burna Boy for what he described as “disrespect”, without mentioning what the self-acclaimed African Giant did to the football star.

    He had requested Burna Boy and his boys to apologise to Obafemi Martins, adding that Obagoal is not their mate.

    However, Martins on his Instagram page on Wednesday, stated the trio had resolved the issue.
